Course Overview

This one-year, practical programme develops the knowledge and hands-on skills required for routine building maintenance and small-scale repair work across a range of trades. Learners undertake workshop-based tasks and classroom theory to prepare for employment in general building maintenance or progression into more specialised construction pathways. It’s ideal for: Learners aiming to enter the construction and facilities sector. Those preparing for maintenance operative and multi-skill repair roles. Individuals wanting a broad foundation before specialising in a trade. For this course, learners will need steel toe capped safety footwear, stationery & learning materials, notebook or notepad for theory lessons, pens, pencils, ruler, folder or document wallet for portfolios and a tape measure (basic 5 m or similar for practical measurement tasks.

A minimum of GCSE Grade 4 (or equivalent) in English Language and a minimum of GCSE Grade 4 (or equivalent) in Mathematics.
You will be assessed through: Knowledge Tests End-of-unit knowledge checks (multiple choice / short answer) Externally set and marked assessments for core units Practical Assessments Tasks performed under supervision in workshop or real-world contexts Performance evidence logged in a portfolio Demonstration of competence and skill application Portfolio / Coursework Summative evidence of practical works Written reports, photos and supervisor observation records

Malvern

Our Malvern campus is home to one of Heart of Worcestershire College’s Construction departments, providing specialist facilities and practical learning environments for students training in the construction trades.

Located in the heart of Malvern, the campus is easily accessible from across Worcestershire and the surrounding areas. Regular bus services connect Malvern with Worcester, Ledbury, Upton-upon-Severn, Pershore and Hereford, making travel to campus straightforward for students commuting from nearby towns and villages.

Great Malvern and Malvern Link train stations provide rail connections to Worcester, Hereford, Birmingham and further afield. From the stations, the campus can be reached by local bus routes, taxi or a short walk depending on your route.

Malvern is well known for its welcoming community, scenic surroundings and local amenities, offering students a supportive and accessible environment to study and develop their construction skills.

Redditch

Redditch has many links to surrounding towns with a circular around Redditch itself including Bromsgrove, Kidderminster, Kings Heath, Evesham, Droitwich, Solihull, Worcester, and Birmingham. The train and bus stations are in close proximity to one another and are a short walk to Peakman Campus and a slightly longer walk to Alliance House.
