Course Overview
This Level 1 Diploma is a practical, introductory bricklaying programme designed for adults with little or no prior experience. It progressively builds foundational skills in masonry and construction setting techniques, balancing workshop practice with classroom theory.
Because the course is structured as part-time (one day per week), it’s ideal for adults who are working, changing careers, or upskilling gradually. Over the duration of the course (typically 30–36 weeks / one academic year), learners cover the same core content as full-time students, just spread across weekly sessions.
For this course you will need:
Steel toe-capped safety footwear (required each session).
High-visibility vest/jacket.
Safety glasses and gloves (as specified by the college).
Tools & Stationery
Tape measure (e.g., 5 m builder’s tape).
Notebook / notepad for theory notes and portfolio tracking.
Pens, pencils, ruler.
Folder / binder for storing worksheets, portfolios and evidence.
Course Modules
Course Information
Must be aged 19 years of age or older.
Practical Assessments (Workshop)
Tutor observation of brickwork tasks carried out during workshop sessions.
Crafts tasks performed to standard and logged as evidence.
Portfolio & Coursework
A structured portfolio showing photos of practical work, notes and tutor evaluations accumulated week-by-week.
Knowledge Checks
Brief written or online quizzes at key points throughout the course to assess underpinning theory (materials, safety, terminology).
Upon successful completion you can progress to:
Level 2 Diploma in Bricklaying (6705-02)
Develops intermediate masonry skills and prepares for employment or apprenticeships.
Bricklaying Apprenticeships
Many adults move into work-based training combined with NVQ outcomes.
Related Construction Study
Courses in general construction, labouring, or multi-skill maintenance.
Employment

Our Malvern campus is home to one of Heart of Worcestershire College’s Construction departments, providing specialist facilities and practical learning environments for students training in the construction trades.
