The college provides support for all our students, from our Personal Tutors providing pastoral support to our Specialist Learning Support and Academic Skills Support Mentors for students with ECHPs.
Personal Tutors
When you start your journey at HoW, you will be assigned a Personal Tutor.
Your Personal Tutor will set actions and monitor your overall progress, whilst also providing you with pastoral support to ensure you reach your full potential at colleges. You Personal Tutor will deliver our THRIVE Personal Development programme through both group tutorials and one-to-one support throughout the year.
SPECIALIST LEARNING SUPPORT
At HoW College, we have teams to offer support to students with ECHP's or learning disabilities and difficulties. With tailored academic support and transitional support, our teams are on hand for each student.
The HoW College Specialist Learning Support team are committed to supporting our High Needs learners with Education, Health & Care Plans (ECHPs) striving to provide a level playing field for students with effective academic support delivered by our Learning Support Assistants (LSAs) and Specialist Learning Support Coaches (SLS Coaches).
From when you first apply, we support our students transition from school to college in making this important leap by ensuring that your journey is smooth, empowering and most importantly, tailored to your needs. We offer support by introducing you to new surroundings, key staff members and more.
Our Learning Support Assistants champion your growth and success within the classroom. Their understanding of diverse heading needs, they will ensure that each step of your journey is met with personalised support. They encourage independence, resilience, and growth and foster an environment for our EHCP learners to thrive and reach their potential. Our LSAs communicate regularly with your curriculum staff to ensure your progress is being monitored, and you will be invited to an annual ECHP review with our High Needs Coordinator, where your progress can be discussed with yourself, and your parents and/or carers.
Academic Skills Support Mentors
Our Academic Skills Support Mentors assist our students with identified learning disabilities and difficulties. They assist to remove barriers from learning and offer tailored learning support to meet the needs of each individual to meet their full potential. Our teams are based in the Learning Centres of Bromsgrove, Redditch and Worcester.
We offer:

- Development of independent working skills
- Exam Access Arrangements
Learners can refer themselves into the service using the Help button on the student portal, or speak to one of their teachers or their Personal Tutor who can also refer them.
Once the referral has been made, an Academic Skills Support Mentor will contact the learner to arrange a meeting and create a tailored action plan to support their needs.
The team can offer a variety of academic support including:
- Providing study skills support
- Providing strategies that are transferrable to the workplace
- Support with planning and prioritising work
- Breaking down larger assignments into more manageable tasks
- Time management and organisational skills
- Requesting specific exam access arrangements or SpLD screening
- Promoting student’s independence
