Course Overview
Do you have a role which focuses on practical teaching? For example, do you teach short courses or recreational evening classes, or train using materials someone else has developed? If so, the Certificate in Education and Training is for you.
This course is designed for those new to teaching in all areas of the lifelong learning sector. This is a 36 credit course at level 4 with a focus on practical teaching. It is appropriate for teachers, tutors, trainers, lecturers and instructors who may be working within an FE college, Adult and Community Learning and for those delivering work based learning such as within voluntary, community, private and public organisations.
The Certificate gives the candidate the underpinning knowledge, understanding and skills needed to confirm occupational competence. This includes the planning and delivering of schemes of work and sessions, negotiation of individual goals, different teaching and learning strategies, communication issues and exploring a range of assessment practices.
Teaching practice of at least 30 hours is a requirement of the qualification.
Delivery Information:
This course is a blended version with weekly 3 hours sessions, with a mixture of in-person, online synchronous and some asynchronous content, as well as 1:1 tutorials.
Staff Experience:
The staff delivering on the teacher education programmes have come from a range of different vocations providing learners with a wealth of experience of teaching academic, business and vocational subjects. All staff on the programme have a recognised teaching qualification in addition to qualifications in their subject specialism.

Course Information
Trainees will need to have a reasonable level of maths and English language (ideally level 2 in both). Trainees will also need at least a level 3 qualification in the subject they intend to teach. They will also need to have a minimum of 30
hours of teaching over the life of the course. The teaching can include small groups and one-to-one sessions and may be paid or voluntary.
The trainee will also need a mentor who has experience in teaching their specialist subject.
Trainees should not have a criminal background which might prevent them from working as a teacher with young people or vulnerable adults.
The College has a commitment to widening participation in Higher Education, and will therefore give careful consideration to prior experiential learning, non-traditional qualifications and qualifications obtained outside of the United Kingdom.
The course will be assessed by written assignments and a portfolio. The trainee will have three assessed observations of their teaching. One assessed observation will be carried out by the mentor.
On successful completion of this course, students can progress onto the Diploma in Teaching which is a full professional qualification appropriate for those with an extensive range of teaching or training responsibilities.
